How to donate platelets
October 18th, 2009 by admin

Andy is going through a lot of blood transfusions and blood platelet treatments. He’ll be needing more throughout this process so that he may go through treatments.

Blood platelets are needed and are sometimes low in stock and very expensive. We’re asking everyone to donate blood platelets. It’s just like donating plasma, where the blood goes out, platelets are extracted and then the blood is put back in the body without the platelets. It’s not a painful experience, but will make you cold so wear warm clothes!

Let the blood bank know you’re donating to Andy by providing his full name (Andrew A. Zorn) and his patient number (809350).

You can donate platelets up to 3 times a week with 48 hours in between.

Don’t take aspirin or aspirin products 48 hours prior.

Other information:

  • Donating takes 90-120 minutes
  • No aspirin products 48 hours prior to donating
  • May donate every 2 days
  • 1 donor = 1 platelet dose
  • Your red blood cells and plasma are returned to the donor

Temporarily Not Eligible
72 hours:

  • Antibiotics (unless used fo acne, skin/nail or local yeast infections)

12 months:

  • Significant cardiac problems, sever asthma, blood transfuion, tissue or organ grafts
  • Travel outside the U.S. to a malaria area

For eligibility questions and appointments, call 713.792.7777 or check the MD Anderson website

If you live in the Houston area, you can donate you platelets and have them go directly to Andy at the following locations:

Blood Donor Center – Mays Clinic (ACB)
1220 Holcombe Entrance #5
2nd Floor, across from the Tree Sculpture
Monday-Friday, 10am – 5pm

Christus St. John Hospital

The last platelet appointment is an hour before closing time

Don’t forget to let the blood bank know you’re donating to Andy by providing his full name (Andrew A. Zorn) and his patient number (809350).

I was also asked if people from out of state can donate for Andy? I will ask in the morning but just wondering if anyone knew the answer to this.

From what I’ve been reading online, all you need to do is MAKE SURE you give them Andy’s info:
Andrew A. Zorn and his patient number (809350)
“Credits” are like “cash” for him to receive blood platelets “free” in exchange for your donation.
If this is not correct, please let us know, but this has how blood banks have done this in the past…
Love you, Andy! Hank & Jewels
